About the Author
Mountain Girl. CEO. Writer. Always paying attention.
Marilyn Moss Rockefeller grew up in the hills of West Virginia, barefoot and stubborn, in a family shaped by hardship and held together by grit. She did not expect to end up running a company, winning awards, or writing books that made readers cry by the fire in Maine. She expected to survive — and then, somewhere along the way, she learned to thrive.

She co-founded Moss Tent Works with her husband, the visionary fabric artist Bill Moss, in 1975. What began as a creative partnership between two people who loved beauty and function grew into Moss Inc., a nationally recognized company whose iconic tents and structures became design landmarks. Marilyn served as president and CEO until she sold the company in 2001—building, along the way, a workplace committed to equity, dignity, and respect, including pioneering policies in support of employees affected by domestic violence, for which she was recognized by New Hope for Women.

She has always been someone who notices things others walk past.

After decades in business, Marilyn turned fully to the page. She earned her MFA in writing from Spalding University, and her work has appeared in Orbis, Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors, Downeast Magazine, Maine Décor, and elsewhere. Her first book, Mountain Girl: Barefoot to Boardroom, told the story of her own improbable journey. Her second, Bill Moss: Fabric Artist & Designer — winner of an IPPY Silver Medal — was a tribute to her late first husband's extraordinary creative legacy.

Her third book, Time Is The Substance, is something different. Written in her eighties, newly widowed, living on the coast of midcoast Maine, it is the work of a woman who has stopped rushing and started listening. It is the kind of book that can only be written by someone who has earned the right to say what she means.

Born in the hills of West Virginia. Now home on the coast of Maine. Still watching. Still writing.
